Saving Renajai, a fantasy RPG. (plotting and character creation thread)

The setting: A congruent, alternate universe where magic is found abundantly in an infinity of different forms. more specificly an island, Renajai, off the main continent where a strange portal exists that emits magic in especially strong and unpredictable ways and which occasionally allows people and animals from other universes to leak through. The island is large, about 2-8 miles wide and 500 miles long, lying about a day's sail from the mainland. The island is tropical at the extreme south, near the portal and warm temperate to the north, consisting mostly of forest, deciduous, evergreen and jungle, but in the wide part of the mid-north part of the island there is a windy plain spanning a dozen miles n-s and the full 8 mile width of the island at that point, excepting the sandy beaches on either side. The main city on the island is located on the landward coast, just south of the plains area in a deciduous forest area. Only powerful mages or the foolhardy approach the portal in the jungles to the south, as the wild magic warps and changes all life in it's proximity drasticly.

The plot: a small group of humans from earth stumble through the portal, becoming warped by the magic of their passage. upon regrouping they find themselves speaking a strange language as if they were born to it, and see a strange stone with glowing lettering. Upon reading the stone, they find that it is a prophecy describing them as the coming saviors of the island. Can they master their strange new powers and abilities, and overcome the disabilities and disadvantages that came with the powers in time?

The cast: the misplaced humans from earth, probably around six of them, a villan and affilliates, probaby three and npc minions, islanders aiding or hindering the prophesied party, any number.
